Petra: Jeremy Rosell's Concert Review
August 17th, 1995 Kansas Coliseum Wichita, Kansas Okay, I realize that this review is eleven years behind schedule, but here it goes... It was August 17, 1995, shortly before the release of No Doubt. This was my first and only live Petra concert. I was a relatively new Pethead, and did not recognize some of the songs they played. The Christian concert was part of a carnival-type event that, honestly, was very poorly attended. I think that the promoters and the band expected a bigger crowd. I could sense some frustration in John's voice during the evening. The band played several songs, but these are the ones I remember: "Dance," "Think Twice," "Just Reach Out" "No Doubt" and "Praying Man." "Beyond Belief" was the encore. I think, (but I am not certain) that they also played "Underneath the Blood." If I knew more about Petra at the time, I would be able to remember more songs. Anyway, here's what made the show unique. First, John seemed slightly "down" or frustrated. Perhaps it was the attendance, but I do not know. He began to sing part of a song from his "Shake" solo album but cut the music off prematurely and said "You guys want to hear Petra songs, not my songs." He thanked his bandmates for letting him pursue a solo album, but reassured everyone that "My ministry is with Petra." Another interesting part was during "No Doubt," when John forgot the words and had to start over. Everyone got a laugh out of it. I recall a girl in the audience saying "We love you John" and people cheered. Overall, the concert was good, but I concluded that a live Petra concert was a bit too loud for my tastes. But I am still a big Petra fan.
